How to Calculate

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²

BMI Metric = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m)]². BMI Imperial = [Weight (lbs) ÷ Height (inches)²] × 703. Ideal Weight (Devine Formula) = 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet (men) or 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet (women).

* Example: 70 kg, 1.75 m → BMI 22.9 (normal)

Step-by-Step Manual Calculation Guide

1

Step 1: Convert height to meters (or inches for imperial formula).

2

Step 2: Divide weight by height squared (and multiply by 703 if using lbs/inches).

3

Step 3: Compare result against WHO categories: Underweight (<18.5), Normal (18.5-24.9), Overweight (25-29.9), Obese (≥30).

Real-World Industry Applications

General Health Screening

Evaluating a 5'10" individual weighing 160 lbs (BMI = 23.0, Normal weight category).

Clinical Risk Stratification

Identifying metabolic health risk levels in primary care patient screening.

Ideal Weight Target Setting

Calculating healthy target weight range (128 - 169 lbs for a 5'9" individual).

BMI & Ideal Weight Calculator Worked Examples

Example 1
70 kg, 1.75 m
Result: BMI 22.9 (normal)
Example 2
90 kg, 1.8 m
Result: BMI 27.8 (overweight)
Example 3
55 kg, 1.6 m
Result: BMI 21.5 (normal)

How it Works

The BMI & Ideal Weight Calculator computes Body Mass Index (weight in kg divided by height in meters squared) and estimates healthy ideal body weight ranges using standard WHO formulas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the standard WHO BMI categories?

Underweight: <18.5; Normal Weight: 18.5-24.9; Overweight: 25.0-29.9; Obese Class I: 30.0-34.9; Obese Class II: 35.0-39.9; Obese Class III: ≥40.

Is BMI accurate for bodybuilders and muscular athletes?

BMI can misclassify muscular individuals as overweight or obese because it cannot distinguish muscle mass from body fat.

What is the Devine Formula for ideal body weight?

The Devine formula estimates ideal body weight based on height: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet for adult males.

Why is waist circumference evaluated alongside BMI?

Waist circumference measures abdominal visceral fat, which strongly correlates with cardiovascular and metabolic health risk regardless of BMI.

Is BMI different for children and teenagers?

Yes, pediatric BMI is plotted on age-and-gender-specific percentile growth charts rather than static adult cutoff categories.
